Bagamoyo

Bagamoyo derives from the words bwaga (to put or throw down) and moyo (heart). So in this case bagamoyo would mean that it was a place to “lay down the burden of your heart” -an expression of relief.

During the eigtheenth and nineteenth centuries, much of the Tanzanian coast was ruled by the Omani Sultanate Zanzibar, whose trading links with Arabia, Asia and Europe created one of the wealthiest dynasties ever seen in Africa. The riches came from the export of goods from the mainland, especially slaves and ivory. An estimated 769,000 slaves were transported from the East African coast during the nineteenth century. Many of them passed through Bagamoyo. Major caravan routes coming from Lake Tanganyika and Lake Victoria, both over 1000km away ended here in Bagamoyo.

Bagamoyo was also the logical starting and ending point for many European explorations of the continent. Stanley, Burton, Speke and Grant all passed through. Most famously also the body of David Livingstone.

In the 1880s the European colonization of East Africa began, and the Germans chose Bagamoyo as their Capital. until 1891 when it was transfered to Dar es Salaam.

When in Bagamoyo there are a lot of historical sites to see.

The Catholic Holy Ghost Mission, one of the oldest Catholic buildings in East Africa built in 1872. The German Boma, the Old Arab Fort. The German Cemetery and the Hanging Tree near to the Badeco Beach Hotel. And 5km away from Bagamoyo the Kaole ruins.
